The $1 Billion Lesson I Learned in a Town of 2,000

Guest: Peter Murphy Lewis
$1 Billion Lesson

In this episode

In this episode of OutDrive, Peter Murphy Lewis—also known as Strategic Pete—joins host Cliff Callis to unpack the nuances of modern marketing, rural values, and the human side of entrepreneurship. From rural Kansas roots to South American adventures, Peter brings a global lens to helping businesses make sense of marketing, not through flashy tactics, but through clarity, strategy, and a deep belief in the power of connection.

Peter’s experience spans continents and industries: professor, CNN correspondent, travel entrepreneur, documentary filmmaker, and now, a sought-after fractional CMO. He talks candidly about how growing up in a small town shaped his worldview, and why understanding business fundamentals is the hidden superpower in a noisy digital age. There is a written companion to this episode in our article on small-town and local marketing.

Key Takeaways:

(02:08) Peter’s early life—from a Kansas bank teller to teaching international politics in South America—set the foundation for his global marketing perspective.

(05:43) His path to marketing was sparked by necessity: when no one would hire him as a professor by night, he created his own business.

(09:10) Why understanding business—not just branding—is key to building marketing that actually performs.

(14:21) The power of reverse-engineering metrics that make sense to non-marketers—like shortening sales cycles and reducing SDR touches.

(17:33) A successful fractional CMO isn’t just a consultant—they own outcomes, embed with teams, and often replace themselves by design.

(21:16) Strategic Pete’s unique client acquisition method: look for companies with great internal reviews but weak external messaging—a branding goldmine.

(27:48) Why generalists (not specialists) are better equipped to survive AI disruption and platform shifts.

(33:05) Attention is the new currency—and the key is knowing where your customers are already hanging out.

(38:52) Happiness = Reality ÷ Expectations. Peter shares how rural America helped shape this lifelong equation—and why it’s tattooed on his arm.

(44:10) Sleeping outside in a hammock 20 nights a year helps Peter stay grounded, grateful, and connected to what really matters.

RAPID-FIRE Q&A

What does being a “fractional CMO” really mean?

It means I’m embedded in a company’s leadership team—owning strategy, execution, and outcomes. I’m not a consultant. I’m accountable. But I’m there a few days a week, not full time.

What kind of clients do you serve best?

B2B companies doing $3M–$20M/year with slim marketing teams and high-margin offerings. They often feel overwhelmed by agencies and underwhelmed by results. That’s where I come in.

Why the name Strategic Pete?

Honestly? I wanted to be Sneaky Pete like the Amazon Prime show. But who wants to hire someone sneaky? A client once told me, “You’re not a marketer—you’re a strategist.” That stuck.

What’s your biggest takeaway from your TV and documentary work?

Storytelling still wins. Whether I’m hosting a show or scaling a campaign, it’s all about helping people feel seen and understood.

What’s one thing people don’t know about you?

I live inside a zoo. Literally. I fall asleep to lions roaring outside. Also, I sleep in a hammock at least 20 nights a year. Keeps me present, grateful, and a little weird.

What inspires your work?

Helping people feel understood. Listening better. Caring more. There’s a big ROI in caring. It’s how I run my team, build marketing strategies, and raise my son.
