Peter Murphy Lewis, Founder & CEO of Strategic Pete, is a leader with a unique approach to business. As a fractional CMO, TV host, and creator of the People Worth Caring About docu-series, Peter has built a reputation for driving growth through purpose, human-centered marketing, and adaptability.

In his recent appearance on the Becker Private and Business Podcast, Peter shared valuable insights on leadership, marketing, and business innovation—insights any leader can apply to their own organization.

Below are the highlights from the conversation, presented in Peter’s own words.

“The Best Way to Control the Narrative Is to Show, Not Tell”

In a world dominated by press and public opinion, controlling the narrative around your business is more important than ever. Peter’s experience in long-term care has shown him the power of authentic storytelling in marketing.

“The best way to control that narrative was to talk about people who want to work there and why they don’t leave for a better-paying job in another industry,” Peter shared.

He’s right—most businesses spend time trying to explain what they do well, but great marketing starts with showing who you are as a company. Peter’s People Worth Caring About docu-series was a prime example. He shifted the conversation in long-term care from the typical negative headlines to the real stories of the people who make the industry tick—the caregivers who are the backbone of the business.

“For me, it’s about showcasing the passion behind the profession. If we want to control the conversation, we need to show the value we bring,” he explained. Whether in healthcare or any other industry, this is a lesson for every business leader: stories sell, not just products or services.

“You Can’t Rest on Your Laurels”

Peter’s success comes from his constant willingness to adapt. He firmly believes that businesses must remain agile to succeed.

“You can’t rest on your laurels. The business world changes too quickly,” he shared. What worked yesterday might not work tomorrow, and leaders need to be prepared for that.

“Every new challenge is an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve,” Peter added. In his view, innovation isn’t a one-time event; it’s an ongoing process that keeps businesses competitive and relevant.

“Great Companies Are Built on Great People”

Peter is clear about what drives long-term business success: people.

“Great companies are built on great people,” he stated, emphasizing that without investing in talent, businesses can’t grow. “If you don’t invest in people, you’re not investing in the future of your company.”

For Peter, talent development is one of the most important responsibilities of a leader. He has spent much of his career helping businesses nurture their talent, ensuring they build strong, capable teams that can drive sustainable success.

“Those people need to be nurtured,” Peter explained, reinforcing his belief that employee growth is key to company growth.

“Vulnerability Is My Currency”

Another cornerstone of Peter’s leadership is vulnerability. “Vulnerability is my currency,” he said. By openly acknowledging challenges and limitations, Peter has built trust with his team and clients. For him, leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about fostering an environment where team members feel safe to contribute, share ideas, and take risks.

“Being vulnerable builds trust, and trust is everything,” Peter explained. His willingness to be open and authentic has helped him create a culture of transparency and collaboration, which he believes is crucial for any business to thrive.

“Stop Complaining and Start Empowering”

When discussing generational differences in the workforce, Peter had one clear message: stop complaining and start empowering.

“Stop complaining about the work ethic of Gen Z and millennials. Instead, empower them,” he said.

Peter believes younger generations are often unfairly criticized for their perceived shortcomings. But in his view, they just need the right guidance and training to unlock their potential.

“We need to stop focusing on the differences and start focusing on empowerment,” he said. By investing in younger talent, businesses can build strong teams that drive real, long-term growth.

“I’m Always Looking for New Opportunities to Innovate”

Innovation is at the core of Peter’s mindset, and he’s always on the lookout for new ways to push boundaries. “I’m always looking for new opportunities to innovate,” he said. “If I’m not challenging myself, I’m not really living.”

Peter’s passion for innovation isn’t just about launching new products—it’s about continuously improving processes, strategies, and the way businesses interact with customers.  For more on this, see our article on digital transformation lessons.

“You can’t just rely on what worked last year. You’ve got to keep pushing boundaries,” he noted.
